This is a simple composition based on a forest path that leads from the shade into the light. I was inspired by the blue tones created by the setting sun and the mix of autumn leaves with the bare branches that made this image interesting.
This design was referenced from a photograph. I really wanted to capture the background colors of the dark and light (almost turquoise) blue of the background light. The tones changed depending on the thickness of the trees and brush. I honestly wasn't sure how this would turn out because of the limitations brush strokes impose but that's what makes it art.
As with most landscapes, I start by laying out the background color which in this case is a light blue. I then added background elements such as trees keeping them light to create depth. The path was placed on the right to offset the center of interest.
Larger elements were then laid onto the canvas including branches and trunks. Finally the leaves were painted on--dark at first and then highlighted leaves were painted on one at a time with a round brush.
I am a self-representing artist in Southern Colorado and have been involved in graphic and digital art for 20 years. For the past few years I have been focusing on fine art and painting (especially abstracts and landscapes). My upcoming works will include purely abstract pieces as well as abstract infused landscapes and cityscapes. When an image comes to my mind I have to create it or it will become an obsession. Painting and creating art is very liberating. It is perhaps one of the most natural forms of expression that I use to share my own unique perspective.
