This is part of a series exploring mindfulness and human psychology.

The imagery was inspired by barnacles, which grow together in large numbers as part of a survival tactic known as "swamping." This physical closeness echoes the emotional connection achieved through empathy, the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. Empathy helps create connection by making the differences between self and other less distinct. The more we can widen the halo of empathy, the more connection we experience, not only with our fellow beings, but with the entire universe.

Varied edition etching. Number 1 of 10. Paper size is 7.5in x 7.5in.

I am an artist and printmaker living in Portland, Oregon. I have always been interested in human psychology and behavior, and I explore this in art. I love traveling and learning about other cultures. Seeing the wide range of human life and possibility inspires me to examine my own life and behavior and to question how we humans construct reality. Although I am often inspired by forms in the world around me, I usually work from internal inspiration, bringing imagery from dreams and the unconscious. My work tends toward the abstract to encourage viewers to collaborate in the art-making by bringing their own meaning to the work, as informed by their own individual experiences. I love when a piece of art or writing can encourage different thoughts depending on what is happening in our lives.
