In psychology, shadows refer to the unconscious, or to aspects of personality of which one is not aware, and which affect behavior in subtle ways. Shadows may appear in visions or dreams, and can help shed light on one's mental or emotional state. Becoming aware of shadows, through paying attention to dreams or through practices such as mindfulness, can help us learn more about ourselves, our behavior, and our environments. We can treat shadows like unwanted guests, shutting them away and trying to forget about them, or we can use them as mirrors, and let them illuminate and give insight into our lives.

I am an artist and printmaker living in Portland, Oregon. I have always been interested in human psychology and behavior, and I explore this in art. I love traveling and learning about other cultures. Seeing the wide range of human life and possibility inspires me to examine my own life and behavior and to question how we humans construct reality. Although I am often inspired by forms in the world around me, I usually work from internal inspiration, bringing imagery from dreams and the unconscious. My work tends toward the abstract to encourage viewers to collaborate in the art-making by bringing their own meaning to the work, as informed by their own individual experiences. I love when a piece of art or writing can encourage different thoughts depending on what is happening in our lives.
