Ready to Hang
As soon as i started reading Avi's "The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle" this image of the heroine popped into mind and stuck with me until I painted the illustration.
I try to add drama, whatever way possible, to all my work. Many pieces stem from interesting text or an unusual combination of words and appear first in my sketchbook during the wee hours of the morning when everything else is quiet. These quick sketches have to happen fast while a scene still moves across my eyes and before it turns into something else.
I work primarily with oils and experiment whenever possible.
My name is Amal and I was raised in Baltimore. I am an illustrator and fine artist trying to blur those lines as much as possible. I was lucky enough to have spent most of my time in city libraries and decided early on that all text craves pictures. I earned my MFA in illustration from the Academy of Art University and work as a freelance illustrator and fine artist producing work for traditional and educational children’s books, magazines, posters and work with commissioned portraits. I live in a small village on the peculiar Island of Long with family, feral cats, and a certain number of giant mushrooms.
