Everything starts with a gestural drawing. I capture lines and rhythms with pencil, and this drawing becomes the map to where the first splash of watercolor, ink or acrylic will drip. Because the paper that I use doesn’t allow the paint be absorbed, the pigment moves around. Gravity and oxygen play a part in the way the pigments set.
The first strokes define the contours and masses. Splash and drip; accidents start to happen. I allow these accidents to play a role in the piece. These accidents define the figures and create the volumes that give movement and energy.
I let the medium take control but in the end the message is controlled by me.
I live every single drip and stroke and brush I add. No precision and no planning; all is pure instinct. Whatever sets will become a nice surprise. The colors move around on their own and bring the piece to life. Figures, bodies, beings, actions; they come out of the paper from a surreal dream. They are moving, and they are not quiet.
