Using oil paint and painting knives along with found items, I paint pictures filled with emotion and energy. Life is filled with daily challenges and troubles we cannot escape. My goal is to look beyond life's turmoils and make paintings that emphasize the joy found in the fleeting moments of beauty all around us.
For many years I painted mainly figures and landscapes. I began painting abstracts as a way to enjoy color relationships without concerning myself so much with the details I would focus on in representational art. I realized over time that I really enjoyed these little paintings so I slowly started shifting more towards abstract painting. With this transition I also changed how I approach painting. I paint in thin layers, blending these by using large brushes. I also gradually build up the tones and gentle shifts in color.
I enjoy the process. Sometimes it takes me to unexpected places. Being willing to change a plan is as necessary in painting as it is in life.
My name is Abbyanna Gehrke. I was raised in San Rafael and Benicia, California, surrounded by the natural beauty of redwood trees and rolling hills or the area. My love of this beautiful area inspired me to start painting landscapes. When painting landscapes the focus for my art is color and scenes with dramatic or unique lighting. When choosing my setting, I'm looking for a mood or atmosphere that I find appealing to express on canvas. I really enjoy being out in nature, so painting landscapes fills me with joy. It's my way of appreciating the beauty that surrounds us and sharing it with others. A few years ago I also began painting pet portraits and now enjoy producing portraits of all my customer's loved ones. In the past, I have worked with glass, precious metal clay, and leather, and have even done some work that aired on local television. I live and work in Northern California.
